Manual testing scales linearly with features. Automated testing doesn't. That's the entire argument, but let me put numbers on it.
The actual cost comparison
We calculated this for a mid-size enterprise client with 400 test cases and bi-weekly releases.
Manual testing: 3 QA engineers at $6,000/month each, plus roughly $4,000/month in escaped defects reaching production. Annual cost: $268,000.
Automated testing: $120,000 upfront investment in test framework and initial test writing, plus 1 QA automation engineer at $7,500/month for maintenance. Year one cost: $210,000. Year two cost: $90,000. Year three cost: $90,000.
Over three years, manual testing costs $804,000. Automated testing costs $390,000. That's a 52% reduction, and the gap widens every year.
